Autumn Flame

Acer rubrum

Description: The Autumn Flame is a large species that can reach heights of up to 100 feet. It is characterized as shade intolerant, meaning it requires full sunlight to thrive and grow effectively.

Twig/Bark: The bark of this tree is initially dark gray and smooth on younger specimens, developing into long, narrow plates as the tree matures. The twigs are slender and shiny, ranging in color from red to brown, and are dotted with small lenticels that contribute to their distinctive appearance.

Leaves: The leaves exhibit an orbicular shape with irregular serrations along the edges. The upper surface of the leaves is green to dark green, while the lower surface typically has a white-glaucous hue. In the fall, the foliage transforms into striking shades of yellow-orange to red, providing an attractive seasonal display.

Flower/Fruit: In spring, the tree produces minute sepals that feature 4 to 5 petals, showcasing bright red to yellow colors. These flowers add visual interest to the landscape and are an important aspect of the tree’s reproductive cycle.

Habitat: This species thrives in a variety of environments, including bottomland and riparian forests, mesic upland forests, bluffs, ditches, swamp margins, and along streams and river banks. Its adaptability to diverse habitats makes it a valuable component of these ecosystems.

All plants, as well as size, color and cultivar, will vary based upon availability.
