Black Gum
Nyssa sylvatica
Tree Description: Large tree up to 115 ft, with a tall, straight trunk and a narrow crown of horizontal branches; shade intolerant.
Twig/Bark: Grayish brown to black thick bark; on older trees deeply fissured and broken into blocky, irregular plates. Slender, reddish brown to gray twigs.
Leaf: Leaf shape is rounded with a few coarse, broad teeth; thin blades with upper surface dark green and shiny with a lower surface paler. Fall color is bright red.
Flower/Fruit: Spring is greenish. Fall is dark blue to nearly black with minute white spots of maturity.
Habitat: Dry to mesic upland forests and woodlands, bottomland and riparian forests, stream banks, wetland margins, roadsides, old fields, and pastures.
